REJOINDER: AN ENGINEER WITHOUT ENGINEERING, A GOVERNMENT WITHOUT LIGHT
Our attention has been drawn to the press statement by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, media aide to Governor Seyi Makinde, titled "Distinguished Engineer vs Jejune Lawyer."
We will not descend into name-calling. We will respond with facts that Oyo people see every day.
1. ON STREETLIGHTS: WHO IS FAILING OYO?
The media aide said we should blame APC Federal Government for blackout because generators are used for streetlights. This is laughable.
Sir, you are the Governor of a State. You budgeted billions for streetlights. If you knew the national grid has challenges, why didn't your "distinguished engineering" provide a sustainable solution from day one instead of burning expensive diesel every night?
You boast of a 5MW solar plant being upgraded to 12MW. For how many years has this story been told? In 2026, Oyo people still see generators powering streetlights with noise and fumes. That is not leadership, that is wasteful management. A real Engineer would have engineered a lasting solution, not excuses.
Blaming Abuja for your failure to light up Ibadan is an admission of incompetence.
2. ON LEKAN SALAMI STADIUM: PRIDE OR SHAME?
You claim renovation has achieved what previous administrations could not. The truth: 3SC, our darling team, cannot play its continental matches in that stadium because it failed CAF inspection. You call it "further upgrades" — we call it substandard job from the beginning.
A stadium that cannot host 3SC international matches after spending billions is not a symbol of pride. It is a symbol of poor engineering supervision by a "distinguished Engineer." The Falconets match you celebrate is a face-saving measure, not a CAF approval for 3SC.
Oyo people deserve a stadium that works, not one that needs renovation after renovation.
3. ON "JEJUNE LAWYER": THE FACTS STING MORE
We thank you for admitting Governor Makinde called Distinguished Senator Sharafadeen Alli a "jejune lawyer." That statement is not factual, it is ignorant.
Senator Alli is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He has built a successful law practice, built businesses, and has empowered hundreds of Oyo sons and daughters. He is not a noise maker.
A lawyer does not need to shout in court daily to be a lawyer. Law is broad — Corporate Law, Banking Law, Property Law. Senator Alli chose the path of a solicitor and businessman. That is success, not pretence.
But let's compare:
- Your Distinguished Engineer — with all his engineering experience and Fellowship — could not engineer steady electricity for streetlights, could not engineer a stadium that passes international inspection, and could not engineer jobs or foreign investment for Oyo. What he has engineered is poverty, debt, and land sales.
- Our "Jejune Lawyer" engineered hope, engineered employment for youths, and engineered effective representation at the Senate with bills and motions that touch lives.
Oyo people will decide in 2027 who between a Distinguished Engineer without engineering results, and a Focused Lawyer with proven service, should lead them.
Governor Makinde should focus on governance and stop the personal attacks. Oyo State is in darkness despite generators. Oyo people need progress, not propaganda.
Signed:
Media Office of Senator Sharafadeen Alli (BSA)
