AKEEM ABAS EMERGES OYO NUJ CHAIRMAN AS COUNCIL ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVES
The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Tuesday elected a new leadership to oversee the union’s affairs for the next three years.
Mr. Akeem Abas of the News Agency of Nigeria emerged chairman with 143 votes, defeating Mr. Raji Adebayo and Mr. Olusola Oladapo who secured 118 and 59 votes respectively.
The vice-chairmanship position went to Mr. Abiodun Atilola of the State Information Chapel, who polled 205 votes against Mr. Sam Nwaoko of the Tribune Chapel with 112 votes.
Mr. Temidayo Adu of the FRCN Chapel was elected secretary with 166 votes, beating Mr. Adeniji Olamide of the State Information Chapel who garnered 149 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Abas said he was grateful for the confidence reposed in him, declaring, “I deeply appreciate the trust you have placed in me, and this victory belongs to every journalist committed to unity and progress.”
He emphasised his readiness to strengthen the council, stating, “I pledge to serve with fairness, transparency and renewed dedication, and I hereby declare a state of emergency on professionalism.”
The union’s legal adviser, Mr. AbdulJelil Oladimeji, inaugurated the new executives, while vacant positions including Financial Secretary, Auditor and Assistant Secretary will be filled through a by-election
