EDUCATION: Government Must Emulate Chief Obafemi Awolowo's Education Model For Nigeria Greatness....Dr. Afowowe

Dr. Oluranti Afowowe of the Department of History and International Studies, Osun State University has called on Federal and State Governments to emulate former Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo's Education Model to achieve industrial revolution.

The University Don made the comment on Sunday while featuring on a flagship current affairs programme called Periscope on JAMZ 100.1fm in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Earlier, Ibadan based Broadcast Journalist, Olayemi Afolabi asked about what can be done to move Nigeria from consuming nation to a productive economy.
Responding, Dr. Afowowe said; " nothing is bad if a country can produce what the people can consume even if she doesn't export it, but in Nigeria we can't produce enough food, we still import things we should be producing "

Reacting to question about the best way government can distribute palliatives to Nigerians, he said "this is my own opinion, left to me, Nigeria should embrace locally made rail transportation system, distributing money and other materials are not the lasting solution.

But a caller from Apata area, Femi by name disagree with the University Lecturer saying "500 billions can procure 8 000 buses which will enable each state with over two hundred buses and that will help reduce cost of transportation system and the hardship citizens are facing "
On education, the Presenter went to memory lane that when the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo introduce free education on 17th January, 1955 he also established Odua investment but today exiting industries are closing because of high cost of running. Any solution?

Dr. Afowowe remarked thus; "if Federal Government and State Government can emulate Chief Obafemi Awolowo's education model, it will encourage industrial revolution that can lead to Nigeria becoming a great economy. When White men discouraged Awolowo over infastruture that can accommodate free education, he went ahead to develop ewekoro cement factory which helped to build classrooms"
On 70 billions naira lawmakers cornered to themselves, Dr. Afowowe said "it is immoral to be having multiple allowances in which the people they are representing aren't having foods but lawmakers are having wardrobe, hardship allowances"

When another caller concluded that education has failed in Nigeria.

The Lecturer vehemently disagree saying" I don't want to be mentioning names but many of our students abroad are doing well showing that Nigerian educational system is good but enabling environment that can promote jobs creation is the issue"
